The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is the grand dame of the Cape Town hotel scene. "The Nellie", as she is affectionally referred to by locals, is one of the oldest hotels in the city and one of the most famous five-star hotels in South Africa. Throughout its history, foreign dignitaries, famous authors and Hollywood celebrities have all sought respite this unforgettable pink estate at the southern tip of Africa.

THE ACCOMMODATION

It may take a moment to orient yourself among the 198 or so rooms at this hotel. Though it has been expanded and renovated many times over, this pink lady has managed to maintain her old world charm while being upgraded with many modern amenities.

My Deluxe Room with king size bed, desk and small seating area was incredibly spacious. The balcony had a beautiful view of the courtyard garden down below and Signal Hill in the distance.

The marble bathroom featured a deep soaking tub and separate shower.

Because this property has such a rich history, it's so much fun wander around. You just never know what kind of room you'll come across.

DINING

Breakfast is served buffet style in the Oasis Bistro. The indoor/outdoor seating area overlooks the pool area.

The hotel's Planet Restaurant and Bar are, in a word, chic. The bar was my personal favorite because felt like a great place to meet for drinks after work or have an evening cocktail with the with friends.

DO

Even if you're not a guest of the hotel, you must stop by to partake in their famous afternoon High Tea. Nigiro Tea, a South African-based tea company, has several flavors of caffeinated and herbal teas which are the perfect complement to the array of sweets and savory bites.

The hotel has all the amenities you'd expect from a large luxury property: a fitness center, spa, two outdoor heated pools, a gift shop, etc.

There is a unique collection of outdoor sculptures spread out across the nine acres the hotel occupies.

At the hotel's doorstep, you'll find the entrance to the Company's Garden right across the Orange Street.

The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is centrally located within the heart of Cape Town's City Centre. It's within walking distance to several shops and restaurants downtown, though most guests would likely take a taxi further afield.
